Amman

The capital of Jordan, Amman is one of the oldest, continuously inhabited cities in the world and is home to almost half of Jordan’s population. Known as the White City it offers visitors a taste of old Arabia with its faded minarets, pavement markets, Arabian sweet shops and crumbling remains of ancient civilizations, as well as a modern side of contemporary buildings, fashionable boutiques and international restaurants. It’s also the gateway to the rest of Jordan including the World Heritage Listed Petra and the resorts of the Dead Sea.

Highlights

  • Climb up Citadel Hill for a fantastic view over the city
  • Visit the Jordan Archaeological Museum that showcases ancient ruins and excavated relics from the capital and the rest of the country
  • Explore the heart of the downtown area with its atmospheric streets filled with exotic smells and home to the Ottoman-style King Hussein Mosque and busy souq that is a shopper’s paradise
  • Take a day trip to the Dead Sea, just 45 miles out of the city, for a chance to bath at the lowest point of the earth, 407 metres below sea level
